Super Athletics topple Ards Colts

ON Wednesday, 6 March, 1985, the gritty thirds of Lisburn Athletic continued their fairytale season by lifting the IFA Youth Cup after beating Ards Colts 3-1 in a tensely-fought final at the Oval.

Goals from ex-Glasgow Rangers player, Thomas Cleland, complemented by one each from Kieran O’Hare and Jim Magilton sealed the historic victory. And, amid long-awaited celebrations, Roy Welsh warned Whites supporters: “Savour this; this is an exceptional team- indeed probably one of the best-ever to come from this club.” The club manager lavished the praise on the three man team which, he said, deserved all the credit “Lawrence Patterson, Gerry Kinneard and Arthur Brady have done a fantastic job.”
