Seventeen years ago Eddie Irvine spearheaded the Jaguar Team in Formula One and on Sunday another Ulsterman, Adam Carroll, will lead the new Jaguar Team in the Formula E Championship at the opening round of the new series in Hong Kong.
This marks the very welcome return of Jaguar to international motorsport; their success was far and few between with Irvine’s best result a third in Monaco and the new team racing in the electric powered series will be aiming for better results.
Portadown driver Carroll will have the role as team leader and he has a wealth of racing experience as a former A1 GP Champion and Indy Car driver in the USA.
Last season he was very much around in Formula E, testing with two teams - Mahindra and Aguri.
Carroll has proved his mettle in testing having worked with Honda in F1, but that opportunity never came his way to race in F1.
Now with Jaguar he gets his first drive with a full works team and it is something that he has earned and he is grabbing the opportunity.
The series is truly international and it will see Carroll and his teammate Mitch Evans race in some very exotic locations.
One of the many factors that drew Jaguar to Formula E was that a round was due to have been staged in London. However, it is missing from the new calendar and there is every chance that Formula E will return to London at some future date.
No-one at Jaguar, including Carroll, is expecting an immediate result and they know very well that there are many teams in the series with a wealth of experience, but that is not to say that they will not be trying.
