Alpha’s Rachael Woods could have been forgiven for thinking that her 14th birthday had come a few days early when she beat the No2 seed in the group stages of the Barcelona Open last weekend.

That helped the teenager to reach the quarter-final of the singles while in the doubles, partnering Clodagh Dunne, the Irish pair were to impressively reach the semi-final, and only failed to book a place in the final when they lost out 22-20 in the third set.

Alpha’s second member of the Irish Under 17 squad Jon McCreedy went out in the opening round of the singles and with his doubles partner unable to travel due to illness, will have been disappointed not to have further competition on this his first cap.
