The Dunmurry Golf Club summer season got underway on Saturday (21st March) and it was a new-comer who snatched the top prize and bagged a trip to the K Club in the process.
The members found the course in excellent conditions and had the added bonus of the perfect weather - sunshine and light winds.
New member Michael Lamont playing off a handicap 15, who has joined having previously played at Hilton Templepatrick Golf Club, returned the best score of the day to win first prize and a trip to the K Cub with Club Professional John Dolan later in the year.
Michael had a steady start on the front nine – thanks to three pars at the third, fourth and ninth for 18 points. However, on the back nine he recorded seven pars, dropping only two shots at the 11th and the 13th to returned 23 points and 41 points to win by one.
Second place went to Michael Black (10), edging out Billy McAuley (14) on the better last six after both returned 41 points - 19 front and 21 back nine.
Fourth place went to another new member Robert Bleakley (11) after he also returned 40 points but he could not follow up his front nine of 22 points. Fifth spot went to Damien White (10) who returned a steady round of 39 points.
Gross prize went to Stevie McCollam (4) who edged out Derek McLachlan (scr) on the better back after both returned 73. The gross looked a long way off for Stevie after dropping six shots on the front nine including a three over seven at the par four fifth.
However, a superb three under 32 on the back nine thanks to birdies at the 11th, 13th, 15th and the 18th secured the prize.
