Lisnagarvey Seconds took centre stage on Saturday 14 November in the first round of the Irish Junior Cup.
They faced Mossley at Comber Road and in dreadful conditions, defeated their opponents 7-0.
The execution of penalty corners proved to be vital in the course of the game as Garvey managed to score three directly and two more from variations to give them the upper hand throughout the 70 minutes.
The home side were always the slicker and with goals from Matthew Nelson, Andy O’Hare, Greg Thompson and Mark Raphael before the half time interval, Garvey were completely in control of the game.
As the weather deteriorated in the second half, the match became more of a contest until Scott McCabe had a great reverse shot which Andy O’Hare touched into the net for goal number five and the result was never in doubt from that point onward.
The Garvey scoring was completed when two more penalty corners were converted by Greg Thompson and Second team skipper Paul Stirling to take the final tally of goals to seven and a place in the second round assured.
This was a very pleasing performance as Garvey Seconds contained no less than 12 players under the age of 18.
However, they now face a tricky second round tie against Kilkeel Seconds in Kilkeel on December 5th.
Garvey Thirds drew 2-2 with South Antrim Seconds on Saturday in the local derby.
The Fourths continued their good run of form with a 1-0 victory over Raphoe Seconds in Junior 2.
Glenn Halliday scored the winning goal with Neil Brazil keeping a clean sheet for the second game running.
Garvey Firsts are in action this weekend with a second round Irish Senior Cup match against Instonians at Shaws Bridge.
Having disposed of NICS by five goals to nil in the first tie, Garvey will be hoping for another good result on Saturday.
Instonians lead the way in the Premier League at the moment and can be certain of giving their visitors a hard game.
Garvey hope to have a near fully fit squad for the game and would be disappointed not to take a win away from Shaws Bridge.
