Competitors from all over Ireland took part in this year’s Lisburn Golf Club Open Week.
They all spoke highly of the course and maintained that it was in the best condition of any parkland course in the country. This resulted in some very low scoring.
The main competition of the week, the Barbour Cup, was held on Friday and Saturday.
Almost 400 competitors took part in the event sponsored by Patrick Coyle of Coyle Agencies. Glenn McAuley (Dunmurry) started with three birdies. He had another birdie at the fifth but conceded strokes to par at the fourth and seventh to go out in 34. After starting the back nine with four birdies, he finished with five pars for 32 and a round of 66. Playing off +1 his net score of 67 looked good enough to win.
Later David Pilkington (Cloverhill) reached the turn in 33 thanks to birdies at the 1st 4th and 8th. He holed from 25 feet on the final green for a back nine of 36 and a round of 69. His net 65 was just enough to claim the coveted trophy.
Results: 1st David Pilkington (4) 65, 2nd Glenn McAuley (+1) 67, 3rd Neil Patton (13) 67, 4th Matt Lyness (5) 68, 5th Jim Murdock (9) 68. Best gross Norman McNellis 72, 2nd Philip Purdy 73.
