While the mums and dads may have been glad of the break from all the hectic preparations before Christmas, there was no shortage of youngsters at Alpha for the annual Family Fun Tournament sponsored by Shannon’s The Jewellers.
There was loads of festive cheer about with badminton coaches dawning suitable dress.
It was a grandstand finish with Jack and Joanne Livingstone winning the final event having had to beat off some tough opposition in the round-robin series with a 21-20 victory over both Stuart and David McCollam and Stevie and Conor Galway while Paige and Chloe Woods had also an influence on the outcome of the group with their partners Trevor (aka Santa) Woods and Paul Greenfield.
In the final, Conor and Stevie Galway proved as difficult opposition as they had been in the earlier contest with the outcome in doubt right up to the end when Jack and Joanne snatched a 21-18 victory.
Jamie and Pam Stephenson were unbeaten in their group, getting the better off Ben and Mercie Alexander in a close match 21-19 and Reuben and Alison Elliott came even closer before losing out 21-20, and their opponents in the final were Dan and Kent Smith, who had shown fine form in coming through their group unbeaten with a decisive 21-10 victory over Sophia and Michelle Conn.
The final was a close affair with Dan and Kent coming through for victory.
Jonathan and Peter Hemphill defeated Gavin and Nathan McClure 21-7 in the group stage and they secured the top prize with a second victory over this pair while Fabian and Michelle Conn came through to secure the final victory of the day beating Ella and Bobby Cheung.
In between competing herself with Kaitlin, Jenny Stephenson, a member of the Alpha Executive Committee presented trophies to the winners and runners-up.
