Jack Armstrong had to be content with runners-up in both the Boys Doubles and Mixed Doubles in the Irish Under 13 Championships in Baldoyne at the weekend.
This was a sterling performance from the young Alpha player and it was his performance in the mixed which will surely bring him the most satisfaction as with Kim Feehily they were only seeded No3/4 but beatNo2 seeds Peter McDonald and Kerry Fallon in the semis.
In the final they made a sound start against the top seeded pair Daniel O’Meara and Alexandra Troy only to see the opening set snatched away 25-23 and the second set was something of an anti-climax losing 21-10.
The boys doubles final was another titanic struggle and it was Armstrong/McDonald who were to take the opening set 21-18.
The second set was even closer with the game switching to the top seeds 21-19 and if the first two sets had been on a knife-edge then the third set was even closer with O’Meara and Staunton getting over the line first…but only just!
