Medal haul in Sheffield for Lisburn 2Gether team

Athletes from Lisburn 2gether Pan-Disability Badminton Club who competed in England recently.

Friday night saw both Gary Bailie and Adam Smyth reach the semi-finals of the LD2 Men’s Singles, while Sarah-Louise Rea reached the final of the LD3 Women’s Singles, narrowly losing one match out of four.

The Saturday saw Gary and Adam remain unbeaten as they set up a final in the LD2 Men’s Doubles, and while Sarah-Louise and club mate Claire O’Neill progressed to the LD2 Women’s Doubles Final.

Sunday morning began with the Mixed Doubles events, where Gary maintained his unbeaten run, partnering Sarah-Louise to claim the LD3 Mixed title.

Adam and Claire were unlucky not to progress past the LD2 group stage after three tight games.

Next up was the Singles, where both Gary and Adam ensured an all-Lisburn final in the LD2 Men’s event, in which Gary came out on top, beating his club mate 21-13.

In the LD3 Women’s Singles Final, Sarah-Louise had a much tighter game, but eventually won her final 21-19 to claim her second gold of the weekend.

Finishing off the weekend with the Doubles Finals, Sarah-Louise and Claire fought hard but were unable to pick up another gold, losing out 18-21 to a pair from England.

Gary and Adam picked up the last medal for the club, winning the LD2 Men’s Doubles convincingly with a 21-14 win.

Overall the club finished the weekend with six gold and three silver medals – a great result from such a small team.

The players and coaches will be taking a short break before beginning preparations for the Welsh 4 Nations in August and the Special Olympics Regional Games that will be taking place in Lisburn later this year.
