Mark and Declan grab Winter League crown

Mark Jamison and Declan Marsden beat the cold damp weather on Saturday to win the Lisburn Winter league after a thrilling 18th-hole victory over Andy Gibb and Tom Beattie in what was a fantastic final.

They played 27 holes in one day to do it too. Early on Saturday morning, they defeated the favourites Neil Thompson and Norman Lambe in the postponed semi-final. Neil and Norman had been undefeated in their league matches but were undone by the eventual winners.

Mark and Declan were behind early on but won the seventh where Declan had a four to go one ahead. Halves at the final two holes gave them victory.

After a quick snack, Mark and Declan went out to play Andy Gibb and Tom Beattie in the final. Mark and Declan went one ahead at the par five 12th where Declan made full use of his stroke. Andy hit a six-iron shot to twelve feet from the flag at the 13th but missed the putt to square the match. He lipped out on the next green for a win but Tom’s par at 15 was sufficient to win the hole and square the match with three holes left to play.

Declan’s par four and net three was sufficient to win the 16th. Andy missed a short putt across the sloping 17th green to square the match. After hitting the back of the final green with his tee shot, Declan’s long putt finished at the edge of the hole to ensure their Winter League victory.

Considering the bleak wintery conditions, the golf was remarkably good. The course was in excellent condition for the time of year as well. Only thirty other golfers ventured out but hopefully the weather will improve for the holiday period.
