Locals off to Glasgow

With little more than six weeks before the action begins, the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council revealed its largest ever team this week.

A large number of athletes from the Lisburn area will be representing their country at the prestigious event.

Amongst those from the local area heading to Scotland is 14-year-old swimmer Rachel Bethel.

Rachel, a pupil at Wallace High School, will compete in the 50m free, 100m free, 200m free, 400m free, 4 x 100m free and the 4 x 100m medley.

The Lisburn City Swimming Club member will be joined by clubmate Aileen Reid and a former clubmate Russell White, who will compete in the Triathlon.

Other locals include Salto, City of Lisburn, National Gymnastic Centre gymnasts India McPeak, Nicole Mawhinney, Sarah Beck and Matthew Cosgrave, Lisburn gymnast Luke Carson, Mark Montgomery from the Hazama Judo Club which runs in Maghaberry Community Centre, bowler Neil Mulholland, Larkfield netball players Caroline O’Hanlon and Michelle Drayne.

Rachel’s delighted mum Claire said: “We’re delighted, we’re really pleased. We are hoping to get tickets now. It’s down to Rachel’s hard work. We’d like to thank her coaches at the Swimming Club too. Everyone is really excited.”
