Local drivers hope to rise to the challenge at Craigantlet Hill Climb

Local drivers, Graham Thompson, Conn Williamson and David Hunter are all set to compete in The Ballyrobert Vauxhall Craigantlet Hill Climb on May 2.

Thompson from Muckamore is the current Northern Ireland Hill Climb Champion and has dominated the sport here in recent years in his self-built and developed GTR Turbo single seat race car.

He was the fastest time of the day at the recent Croft Hill Climb near Holywood.

He will run against the dozen or so top British drivers at Craigantlet and will be hoping for a top 10 finish.

Conn Williamson, an insurance broker from Glenavy, has entered the Historic Class and will dirve his Sunbeam Tiger.

Williamson who owns a number of older cars competes in Classic and Historic events all over Ireland.

The favourite to win shouyld be Trevor Willis, a former British Champion and twice winner here, in 2012 and 2014.

The organisers, the Ulster Automobile Club have a full entry of 90 cars, plus a Reserve list and the bulk of that will be made up of local competitors contesting the Millers Oils ANICC Northern Ireland Hill Climb Championship, in a variety of cars that should include something for everyone.

The event takes place at Craigantlet, on the Upper Belmont Road on the edge of East Belfast. Practice starts at 9.30am and timed runs at 1.00pm.
