The competition always attracts a good entry and is very keenly contested. William and Reece won outright by virtue of an incredible back nine in which they amassed a stunning 26 points.

The pair’s score of 44 points was one better than Simon Gray and Philip Gray.

Two pairs scored 42 points with third place going to John Little and Ryan Shanley by virtue of a better back nine and fourth to Neil Dunlop and Joseph Mikhael.

In fifth place on 41 points were another father and son duo Tony Wilson and his son Ruairi.

Rossmore Cup

On Sunday, the Rossmore Cup team, having secured 1.5 points away from home, needed 2.5 points at home and in excess of six holes against Mannan Castle to progress to the next round.

Team Captain Michael McCormick made a number of changes forced and unforced. He sent out new pair Frank Wallace and Gary Gorman first and was rewarded when they won four and three. Out second was Club Captain Paul Banford and Kevin Smylie. They were never ahead in their match and were three down a number of times but they fought hard and halved their match.

The third match saw two recent winners paired in Andy Carberry and Reece Wilson. They eventually won two up.

Two and a half points were now secured but everything hinged on the last match. A win by Mannan Castle would put them through but a half match or a win would see Rockmount through.

Seasoned campaigners Colin Marshall and Stephen Walker did not let the team down, moving to two up at the 12th when Colin made a solid par. They didn’t let that lead slip and eventually ran out three and two winners.

Junior Cup

The Junior Cup qualifying was at St Patrick’s Golf Club in Downpatrick. James Hume had a very good 76 but the other team members’ scores were not quite as impressive. Reece McKeown had 80, Darren McClure had 82 and both Colin Henderson and Ben Frazer had 8’s. The team’s best four cards amounted to 322 but was well outside the qualifying scores of Mourne, Edenmore, St Patrick’s and Spa.
