Last week, Rockmount’s Jimmy Carroll team travelled to Westmanstown Golf Club in Dublin trying to achieve what no Ulster club has been able to do before now; win the Jimmy Carroll Cup.

With eight teams participating, two from each of the four provinces, it was always going to be tough ask.

All play starts at the same time using sixteen of the eighteen holes as starting points. Brothers Roy and Ronnie Cole started at the first hole and finished with a level par round of 36 points.

Bob Jellie and partner Mark Kyle had a very good score of 39 points as did team captain Frank Wallace and partner Tommy Mearns. The fourth pair Al McCune and John McGrath scored a credible 37 points.

The best three cards totalled 115 points but this was dwarfed by the winning team’s score of 130. Leinster qualifiers Lucan Golf Club won the Jimmy Carroll Cup for the second year in a row, beating off a great challenge from Connaught qualifiers Tuam Golf Club.

Lucan are near neighbours of Westmanstown, maybe the local knowledge was to their advantage this year.

Nonetheless, the Rockmount team had a great day out and will look forward to entering and bettering this year’s performance in 2015.

Having secured two and a half points at Clandeboye Golf Club, Rockmount’s Holt Shield team needed three points to progress to the last eight of this year’s competition.

On Tuesday evening, team captain Barry Douds welcomed Clandeboye to Rockmount for the second leg.

Andy Gregge was out first, after his narrow defeat at Clandeboye, he was determined to get a point at home; his match went down to the last hole before he secured the victory.

Similarly, Mark Wynne out second was beaten last week at Clandeboye but fared much better at home winning his match four and three.

Ryan Wilson was out third and, although his match was tight tussle, he eventually won two and one.

Jimmy Robinson out fourth was sharing his match and James Hume was ahead in his match when the scores from the other matches put the result beyond doubt.

Rockmount will play either Kirkistown Golf Club or Ballymena Golf Club in the quarter finals.
