Mervyn tops Past Captains’ Day at Dunmurry Golf Club

Like most local clubs, Dunmurry was closed on Saturday and that left Mervyn Boyd as the big individual winner of the weekend.

On Friday, Dunmurry Captain Lawrence Patterson hosted the annual Past Captains’ Day with 12 playing golf and another five joining him for a meal in the evening.

The winner of the Shield was Mervyn, who returned 38 points to edge out Billy Rogan by a single shot.

Earlier in the week, the Irish Mixed team captained by Nigel Abernethy took on a strong Shandon Park at Balmoral in the first round of the knock stage.

Noel Magill and Janice McKee lost on the 18th and John Cochrane and Patricia Brennan lost five and three. However, a victory by Shane McCotter and Claire Usher three and one, followed up by Peter McRoberts and Ross Boyce winning four and three tied the game at 2-2.

Things looked bleak for the Dunmurry side as Tom Snoddon and Donna Gillespie were two down with three holes to play but they produce a tremendous finish to win the last three holes and take Dunmurry into the next round.

HOLT SHEILD

On Sunday, the Dunmurry course had recovered from the heavy rain of Saturday allowing the Holt Shield and Ulster Cup games to go ahead.

Dunmurry took on Greenacres in the penultimate game of Holt Shield league stages and recorded a 3.5 to 1.5 win.

Star of the show was juvenile Ward Farrell with a seven and six win, with Gareth Shirlow three and one and Shane McCotter three and two winners. Scott Malcolm claimed a half while Noel Magill lost on the 18th.

Team Captain Daryl Flanagan was happy with the performance and with one game to go against Knock, to be played by the end of June, Dunmurry sit on 33 points with a place in the knock stages a possibility.

ULSTER CUP

Also on Sunday, Dunmurry took on Malone in the first leg of the Ulster Cup third round.

In a keenly contested match, Michael Forth’s team now go into the return leg 4.5 to 2.5 ahead with a nine whole advantage.

Good wins from Michael Black four and three, Jon Dickinson three and two. Shane McIlvenny two and one and Joe McCall three and two, while Maurice Ferguson halved his match set up the victory.

James Kane was unlucky to lose on the 18th while Lorcan O’Kane went down two and one.
