Lisburn golfers get a pleasant surprise

AFTER the heavy rain early last week followed by the severe frost on Friday night, Lisburn golfers were pleasantly surprised to find the course open for play on Saturday. There were a few damp patches and ‘icebergs’ on the greens made chipping and putting difficult.

This did not prevent some good scores being recorded. Tommy Beattie (14) was top scorer with 21 points to win Section 2. He finished two points ahead of Kenny Gilmore (20) and Chris Scott (20) with Kenny getting the verdict for second place on count back.

Four players scored 20 points in Section 1. Handicap reductions for previous successes eliminated Colin Reid and Gregory Law. Darren Welsh (11) and Brian Patterson (10) also finished on 20 with Darren’s better finish securing first place. Roy Wallace (13) was third on 19 points.

Despite a handicap reduction Derek Gallagher (19) claimed Section 3 on 18 points, one ahead of Joe Davey (25) with Billy Lutton (26) third one point behind.

The final round of matches in the Winter League were completed to decide the eight qualifiers.

Group 1 Mervyn Law & Mervyn Hewitt, Group 2 Graeme Kerr & Brian Sparkes, Group 3 Jim Bell & Brian Patterson, Group 4 Martin McDonald & Michael Rooney, Group 5 Philip Sanaghan & Richard McDermott, Group 6 Kevin Smyth & Jim Simmons, Group 7 Paul Watters & Wesley Haslett. Best Runners Up, Ken Haslem & Rory Sanaghan.

With more heavy rain on Saturday night the course was closed on Sunday.
