It was a different story in the Jimmy Bruen when Lambeg pulled off one of the most astonishing victories in their short history, beating Dungannon G. C. 3 and 2 and are now in the draw for the last sixteen.Stephen Thornhill and Raymond Rodgers were beaten on the 17th to go down 2 and 1, while Tommy Coulter and Craig Tiffen fought back to all square going down the last after being 3 down but a lapse in putting gave Dungannon this game to go into a 2-0 lead. Back at the 15th, Ivor Harron and Tony Hamilton trounced their opponents 4 and 3 and shortly afterwards Ian Jefferson and Michael Pollins won 2 and 1 to leave the score at 2-2 and a nail biting finish. Stephen Johnston and Andrew Burrell were in prime position, sitting at 3 up with 3 to play, but Dungannon did not lie down and won the next two holes. Lambeg only needed a half on the last and it was Stephen who was left with a nasty 2 ft putt to clinch the match and with nerves of steel, clinch it he did.

A fantastic performance by the lads and credit must go to the Team Captain, Jim Hanna who had to make some team changes when other players became unavailable.

This week’s competition was sponsored by Arthur A. Prentice, Plumbing and Heating. and the winner, was David Hyman (23) with a magnificent score of 44pts.

David got off to a terrible start and was sitting on 3 pts after the third hole but four pars out of the next six took him to 19 pts for the front nine. A further five pars and only one double bogey in the back nine brought his tally to 44pts.

John Oakes (10) also finished on 44pts and finished second once again after the count-back. John never scored more than a five in his whole round and his first nine included four pars and two birdies. Three fantastic birdies in the back nine was not enough to win the first prize and he must be disappointed in not winning the top prize after a magnificent display of amateur golf. Three players finished in third position but it was Aidan Daly (21) who won on the count-back.Aidan scored only 16 pts in the front nine but no-one was ever taking the prize on a count-back with he had no less than 26 pts in the back nine which included five pars and a birdie. The two players who also finished on 42pts but losing out were Craig Tiffen and Tony Hamilton. Craig also lost out on a count-back for the Best Gross which was won by Michael English.
