Jim the winner at Lambeg

JIM Hanna (26) put the disappointment of missing out on being selected for the Ulster 4-ball team behind him by winning the Hoover/Candy sponsored stroke competition at Lambeg Golf Club with a net 59 (7 under par).

Jim was beaten into second place after the count-back a few weeks ago but not this time winning by two clear shots. Continuing his fine form, his round was a simple exhibition of steady golf using the advantage of the extra strokes to its full. He had four par holes and no worse than a six on his card.

It is unusual for players with high handicaps to win stroke competitions but it was another high handicapper who took second with a net 61. Chris Boyd, (26) who is only recently back playing after a long injury played a very similar game to Jim. The only blemish was a seven on the 10th but a birdie at the sixth cancelled that out. Three players finished tied on 62 net but it was Kirk Thornhill (17) who took third place after the count-back. Five pars in the back nine was the decisive factor. The two players to lose out were John Oakes (10) and Warren McArdle (24). Best Gross was won by Ivor Harron with a round of 71. Mark Toman (13) was the winner of “the Wednesday Hat”.

After putting in a great performance and against very strong opposition, Lambeg were unsuccessful in progressing any further in the Jimmy Bruen trophy at Rockmount. Next weeks competition is back to stableford and is for the Fred Daly.
