Girvan takes top prize at Captain’s Day

Sharing his limelight was Chris Davis, who had a hole in one at the 13th - undoubtedly the best shot of the day.

With over 300 entries, the competition had to be played over two days. Allison Cameron (13) was top scorer on Friday and duly won the Juvenile’s prize. Andrew Campbell’s tee shot to the sixth green set a standard which could not be improved for the nearest to the pin.

Pars at the fourth and fifth helped Girvan (25) accumulate 21 points on the front nine. He had 40 points on the final tee but drove into the trees and failed to add to his total.

Would that cost him? He had a long, anxious wait to find out.

Others had their chances. Colin Todd (24) had 22 points on the front nine but could only finish with single points on the final two holes. His total of 40 left him second on count back. Four competitors finished with 39 points: Greg Ferris (13), Jonathan Scott (14), Ronnie McCully (15) and Andrew Blakely (20) giving them third, fourth and fifth prizes respectively.

With a round of 74, Chris Moulds won the gross prize. Ken Burns (10) had 38 points to win the prize for the Seniors. Ross Morrow and Trevor Allen won the junior and senior putting prizes while Colin Smyth had the best tee shot to the final green.

It was generally accepted that the course was in its best ever condition thanks to the efforts of head greenkeeper Robert Nelson and his staff.

The excellent weather added to the occasion to make it memorable for everyone. The CSS was 73 with 17 competitors scoring 37 or more points.

The ladies prize-winners were: Section A Janice Wallace, Section B Christine McCullough, Section C Norma Cairns. Best gross Julie Robinson and 9 holes Patricia Clarke.

The captain John Boyd entertained the council and his visitors on Thursday. Council: 1st Peter Cairns, 2nd Noel Robinson 3rd Ken Haslem.

Following a buffet meal, the captain and his wife Amy presented the prizes.

In his speech, the captain thanked all those who had helped him during the year and congratulated the winners. The evening ended with dancing to music from the rock and roll years.
