Gary’s great round at Lisburn

GARY McCarter (10) had his best ever round of golf at Lisburn last week to lead the qualifiers in the Mills CNC sponsored Hilden Cup. After heavy rain during the week the course was damp in some areas necessitating ‘lift, clean and place through the green’.

After an opening par Gary pitched close for birdie threes at the second and third. He followed with six pars for a front nine of 34. He dropped four strokes on the back nine for a round of 74 and a net 64. He now qualifies for the Virgin Atlantic PGA National Pro-Am regional final at The Island near Dublin on July 2.

Gary Hewitt (12) finished two strokes behind the winner after two nines of 39.

Despite finishing with two double bogeys Alan Lappin (25) defeated Neil Larmour (21) for third place on count back. Chris Moulds (1), David Armstrong (11) and Norman Lambe (21) finished on 68.

After opening with three fours, Chris had a hole in one at the short fourth. He followed with two birdies and a birdie at the ninth gave him a front nine of 30. He came back in 39 to win the best gross prize. Some of the net 72s qualified for the knock out stages of the competition.

It was a poor day for Lisburn teams with only the Fred Daly team being successful. Victories by Mark Armstrong, Lewis Patmore and Mark Bailie together with a halved match by Adam McKendry forced a draw at Carrickfergus for an aggregate 8½ - 5½ triumph.

With Chris Moulds and Ryan Symington unavailable, Lisburn did well to win two matches at Kirkistown Castle. Greg Bailie almost snatched a half but his opponent holed from 12 feet on the final green to win.

In the Ulster Cup Lisburn got off to a bad start with a 5½ – 1½ defeat at Ballymena. Keith McCrum won 2 up and Glen Waring gained a vital half. Ex-badminton international player George Stephens lost on the last green as did Brian Houston. Randal Kernaghan did well to take a big hitting opponent to the 16th green.

Congratulations to Ryan Symington on his second place in the Headfort Scratch Cup. He finished one stroke behind the winner Simon Ward.
