Dungannon lady wins Lisburn Open

Over 200 lady golfers took to the tee at Lisburn Golf Club to compete in the fifth annual Forest Feast Lisburn Ladies’ Open on Thursday.

Over 20 clubs from across Northern Ireland and Donegal battled it out with Eileen Moore from Dungannon being crowned the Open winner.

Commenting on her win, Eileen said: “I was delighted to win the tournament - it was completely unexpected. It was a pleasure to play on such a beautiful course and I’m looking forward to next year’s event already.”

Lisburn Golf Club, Lady Captain, Gil Colvin commented: “Once again the turn-out for the annual Lisburn Ladies’ Open was fantastic, with many competitors returning year on year to participate. We would like to thank Forest Feast for its continued support and sponsorship of the event and to all the participants that made the day such a success.”

As tradition dictates, each golfer received a Forest Feast goody box, ensuring they were fuelled to play their 18 holes.

The full list of prize winners was as follows:

Section A

1st Eileen Moore 38pts, 2nd Jayne Henry 36 pts both from Dungannon, 3rd N Henry 36pts Moyola, 4th Hazel Brown 36pts Lisburn.

Section B

1st E Ruddock 39pts, 2nd Lynne Brown 37pts Lisburn, 3rd C Cranston 34pts, 4th Daphne Houston 33pts. Gross 1st Sarah Rafferty Dungannon with Margaret Boomer from Lisburn in 2nd place.

Deirdre Burns, Marketing Manager Forest Feast said: “The Lisburn Ladies’ Open is an eagerly anticipated event on the Northern Ireland golfing calendar, attracting increasing levels of competitors each year.

“This is Forest Feast’s fifth year of sponsorship and we are delighted to be associated with such a prestigious event.”

Prize-giving

Mrs Gil Colvin, Lady Captain of the Ladies Section, welcomed the ladies to their monthly prize giving and supper.

The weather has been kind to the lady Golfers with all the competitions running to schedule and some good scores being posted despite the course playing rather long.

The Captain welcomed Mrs Dorothy Boyd, a past Captain, Honorary Secretary and President, to present her prizes played for in the Boyd Plate. Sect A 1st Hazel Brown 38 pts, 2nd Mary Parker 38 pts, 3rd Maeve Markey 36pts. Sect B 1st Margaret Walker 35 pts, 2nd Norma Cairns 34pts, 3rd Patricia Neville 34pts. The gross prize went to Janice Wallace with 23 pts.

The Ridges Cup was the next trophy to be contested and honours went to Hon Secretary, Julie Robinson who had a nett 73, just pipping Hazel McNally on the better back nine. The Section B prizes went to Margaret McDonagh in first place on 76 nett with Liz McQuoid in second spot on 79. A special thanks go to the sponsors Sylvia Carr and Liz Hill who presented beautiful clocks to the prize winners. Fionnuala Kane won the nine hole competition.

On Tuesday 13 May, the ladies competed for the opportunity to represent Lisburn at the finals of the Mary Peters Sports Trust, to be played in Masserene in August. A worthy winner and ambassador for Lisburn was Vivienne Walsh with 40 points.

Also featuring in the prizes were Maureen Bryson, Julie Robinson, Ida Ross, Rosie Leech, Jill Carruthers and Janice Wallace. The nine hole competition was won by Beth Kee and sponsorship was kindly provided by Charles Hurst.

The Kee Trophy was played on Tuesday 20 May with some ladies on the receiving end of a few sharp showers, but ever valiant, most battled on through the elements. It was the evening players who had the best of the conditions and this was reflected in the scores with first place going to Janice E Orr on 37 points.

Janice gave a lovely speech thanking Beth Kee for presenting the trophy and reminiscing about how many years she and her mother had been friends with Beth and how this added to her pleasure in winning. Second place went to Bernie McDonald with Rosie Leech in third spot.

The final competition results announced were for the prizes presented by Lindsay Cars (Mazda). Sect A 1st Maeve Markey 73 nett, 2nd Janice Wallace 74 nett. Sect B 1st Jill Skelton 2nd Norma Cairns and Anne Beatty won the nine hole competition.
