Disappointing time for Lisburn’s golf teams

After a narrow win at home the team drew the away match to go through to the third round.

Cairan Lyness & David Waterworth and Phil Stewart & Glenn Crookshanks both won by 2 and 1. Alan Gilmore & David Payne were called in on the 17th tee with the match all square.

An excellent round of 71 by Ryan Symington and a 74 from Norman McNellis was not sufficient for Lisburn to qualify in the Senior Cup at Knock.

The Rossmore Cup team forced a draw at Killymoon but could not overcome a home defeat to go out of the competition.

The Ulster Cup team arrived at Warrenpoint in good time for their match. Unfortunately the Senior Cup qualifying round had to be delayed for two hours due to flooding on several greens. The rain was still falling and it seemed that the Ulster Cup match would have to be postponed as the last Senior Cup players teed off about 4.30pm. The GUI representative could only offer a delay of two days which was unsuitable to both teams. As no other date was possible the match got under way at 5.00p.m. Some players had already left and had to be recalled.

The weather improved and Warrenpoint won the top four matches. Andy Neill managed a half for Lisburn but it was not sufficient to prevent Warrenpoint going through.

Mark Bailie scored Lisburn’s only victory at Kirkistown Castle in the Holt Shield. He holed from three feet on the last green to secure a vital point.

Fred Daly - A strong Lurgan team defeated Lisburn 5 and a half – 1 and a half in the first leg at Lurgan.

There was better news in the Jimmy Bruen Shield when Lisburn beat Malone at Balmoral. After winning the top three matches the last two were called in.

David Armstrong (10) won the Lindsay Mazda Trophy with 41 points. He reached the turn in 40 for 19 points but played the back nine in 37, which included a double bogey at 16 for 22 points. He finished one ahead of Ciaran Lyness (19) who had two halves of 20 points. Daryl Scott (15), Paul Thompson (19) and Colin Todd (20) all scored 39 points with Daryl claiming third spot on the last six holes. The damp conditions and strong breeze increased the CSS to 74.

Seniors 1st G. Ferris 36 pts. 2nd J. Hutchinson 35 pts. 3rd I. Shane  34 pts.

Congratulations to Lisburn’s Assistant Head Greenkeeper Stephen Kelly who won the Ulster Scratch Foursomes at Malone playing with Lurgan club mate Dave Sutton.
