Christopher becomes the youngest ever winner of Captain’s Day prize

It has been a great week for Dunmurry Golf Club Captain Lawrence Patterson. First of all the rain stayed away, with the Hat, Mixed Flag, Grouse Foursomes, Ladies and Juvenile competitions all being completed.

The highlight of a busy week was when 234 members and visitors competed for Lawrence’s prizes on Saturday June 14 in almost perfect overhead conditions and the course in pristine order.

The winner was a delighted former Juvenile Captain Christopher Morgan – who at 19 years old, became the youngest ever winner of the Captain’s prize. Playing off a three handicap, Christopher had the perfect start with a birdie 3 at the first and dropped his only shot of the day at the par 4 6th for a level par 35 shots and 20 pts on the front nine.

On the back nine Christopher recorded birdies at the two par 3’s, 12th and 16th and pars at ever other hole saw him return a two under par 33, and 21 pts for an overall winning score of 41 pts.

In second place was Maurice Dunlop (23) who despite not scoring on the second hole, returned 18 pts on the front nine. However on the back nine - thanks to picking four points at the 11th and three points at the each of the 12th, 14th and 15th saw him record 22 pts and overall total of 40 pts.

Third place went to Brian Magee (11) who recorded 20 pts on each nine. The highlight being a birdie two at the 7th.

The gross prize was won by Graham Dickson (0) with a tremendous three under 67. Graham also started with a birdie three at the first and another at the ninth and only dropped a shot at the second for a one under 34 for the first nine.

On the back nine Graham birdied three of the first five holes and finished off with fours on the last four holes for a two under 33 and a great score of 67.

Section 10 and under – Nigel Abernethy 39 pts on better back nine from Glen McAuley.

Section 11-18 – Paul Watters (11) 40 pts on better back nine from Denis Sheridan.

Juvenile winner – Ryan Trimble 39 pts. Gross – Liam Jennings 76.

Team News

It was a case of mixed fortunes for Dunmurry teams’ on Sunday – the Barton Shield progressed to the third round at Belvoir Park. In the morning Greenisland could not field a team so Dunmurry went straight through to the second round.

In the afternoon game Dunmurry proved too strong for Galgorm Castle winning by 10 holes and now face Moyola Park at Belvoir at the end of the month.

The Holt Shield despite losing their last league game at Knock 3.5-1.5, still will qualify for the last sixteen. The Ulster Cup team travelled to Malone holding a 4.5-2.5 advantage from the first leg. In a tense finish Dunmurry could only win two games and ended their interest in this season’s competition by the narrowest of margins 7.5-6.5.
