Both the Ulster Cup and the District Cup teams were up against it following poor showings in their first leg matches. After the brilliant weather on Saturday the temperature and Lisburn’s hopes dropped when David Armstrong lost the opener in the Ulster Cup match against Ballymena on the 13th green. Keith McCrum put up a good fight but lost on the last green. Brian Houston and Glen Waring won their matches but it was too late and the remaining matches were called in.

The District Cup team had to endure heavy showers as well as the low temperatures in their match against Kirkistown Castle. Ryan Symington got the locals off to a good start with victory on the last green. Norman McNellis won 3 and 1 but Chris Moulds, Stephen Shaw and Gary Morrow could only halve their matches. Stuart Campbell lost on the 15th green to give Kirkistown an unassailable lead. Matt Lyness was called in when one ahead.

Dr. Andrew Cairns (26) won the Dun Laoghaire Trophy as the leading qualifier in the Musgrave Cup qualifying competition. He had a par three at the fourth followed by pars at 13 and 15. Good putting and no ‘disasters’ gave him 41 points and a handicap reduction of two strokes. Three competitors finished one point in arrears: Norman Lambe (21), David McCallister (9) and Aaron Taggart (16). Norman finished with a par three to snatch second place with David third and Aaron fourth.

Gavin Hawkins, Tommy Beattie and Neil Larmour all finished on 39.

GUI President Ivor McCandless with his wife Audrey have just returned from Augusta where they watched the Masters. They entered by Gate 6 where they received their badges which had to be worn at all times. Security was very tight and the bar codes on these badges were read every day. They entitled them to enter the Clubhouse and/or the Trophy Room.

They spent several enjoyable days in the sunshine watching the golf and were surprised at the size of the course and its undulations. The 18th hole is similar to the 17th at Lisburn but the green is on a much higher level. They had a meal in the Trophy room where they were joined by Mrs Luke Donald and her mother.

They witnessed Adam Scott and Angel Cabrera shooting birdies at the final hole to force a play-off which Scott won.
