An ace for Peter but he still gets his pocket picked by his playing partners

Peter Cairns, who carded a hole in one at Lisburn Golf Club's fourth hole last weekend.

The cold damp conditions reduced the entry to 61. The remainder considered it was a better option to chase after the ‘black-weekend’ bargains.

Peter was playing with Trevor Allen and David Megrath when he hit his nine iron tee shot at the fourth. The hole was cut at the front of the green and could not be seen from the tee.

The ball went straight at the flag and when the competitors reached the green, there was no sign of the ball. Where had it gone?

David Galway, Brian Wilkinson (top scorer) and Noel Robinson braved the elements at Lisburn.

Peter walked to the green and calmly picked it out of the hole to record his first ever ace.

Unfortunately, though, he had not entered the ‘twos’ and so wouldn’t scoop the standard half the pot for his efforts.

To make matters even worse, he even lost his matches to his playing partners.

Helped by a two at the fourth, Brian Wilkinson (18) was the top scorer with 25 points. He was a clear winner of Section Two.

Ivor Arbuthnot (17) and David Phelan (19) finished on 22 with Ivor getting the verdict for second place on count back.

Rodney Osborne (11) won Section One with 22 points. He was two under par after four holes and completed the front nine in 37 shots. Ben Kirkwood (11) was in the hunt for a prize until he carded a frustrating ding at the eighth hole.

He would live to rue that error as he eventually lost out on count back to Mervyn Mawhinney (13), after they both finished their rounds on 20 points.

There was a close finish in Section Three too, with six players scoring 20 points or more. Chris Scott (22) finished with 22 points to win with Peter Reid (22) second. Peter was one of six competitors to score a birdie two at the fourth.
