Garvey Fifths get controlled win against North Down

The Fifths got off to a good start and dominated possession and territory from the push back. Several clear chances, including a run of short corners, came and went without the home side taking the lead their build up play deserved.

In the end, the deadlock was broken by Rupert Pinion who took what was probably his hardest chance. Pinion won the ball on the half way and raced clear of his marker to strike a firm shot past the onrushing goalkeeper to give Garvey a 1-0 lead. This was all the more impressive as the North Down last man knocked Pinion off balance as he was trying to get his shot away.

The second period followed the pattern of the first with numerous chances not being taken. The young North goalkeeper also played his part with a string of fine saves.

Eventually the second goal came after some neat midfield play between Jess and Murray before Murray found Andy Watt free in the circle. Watt spun and buried his shot high into the net to give Garvey the cushion of a 2-0 lead.

The third duly followed after an excellent Nye through ball found Murray unmarked in the circle. He had time to pick his pass for Darren Scott to despatch the pull back into the corner with aplomb. It was now 3-0 and there was no way back into the game for North Down.
