Fred Daly team get off to a good start

THE Lisburn Fred Daly team got off to a great start in this year’s competition with a 5–2 victory over Carrickfergus in the home leg.

Lisburn’s top player, Christian Kennedy got off to a bad start and never got on level terms with Matthew Weir to lose on the 16th green.

Craig Ryan got off to a great start in his match and was six ahead at the turn. Unfortunately he lost touch on the longer back nine and lost on the last green.

Lewis Patmore, Adam McKendry and Mark Armstrong had big victories. A birdie three at 15 put Mark Baillie three ahead in his match and he halved 16 to win 3 and 2.

Mark McNellis recovered from being three down after eight to go one ahead after 16. He lost 17 but hit a five iron shot into the middle of the final green to win the hole with a par three. His victory could be crucial for the match at Carrickfergus.

Mervyn Skates (18) was the winner of the April Stableford with 42 points. There were over 200 entries for the competition which was sponsored by the Style Gallery. He dropped five strokes in the first four holes but completed the front nine with two birdies for a gross 39 and 24 points. Despite a ‘ding’ at 15 and a double bogey at the final hole he amassed 18 points.

James Dowling (16) finished in second place with a par three for 41 points. He was two ahead of Ronnie McCully (17) with Gary Hanna (19) and Brian Sparkes (18) next on 38.

Jordan Patmore had the best gross score with 32 points defeating Gary Morrow on count back.

The White Horse Society held their Spring Meeting at Portmarnock Golf Links. In freezing cold conditions Trevor Allen defeated Noel Robinson on count back for the top prize.

Wednesday Stableford: 1st John Henry 45pts, 2nd Barry McQuillan 41pts, 3rd Mervyn Law 40pts

Joe McCullough had three birdie twos in his round. Unfortunately he failed to birdie the 18th.
