U9s back in action following enforced break

AFTER what seemed like an eternity due to Easter breaks and bad weather hostilities were finally resumed at St. Malachy’s on Saturday in The Belfast GDC for Lisburn Distillery U9s.

Game one saw the boys start really well against a very strong Sydenham side and it didn’t take long for Matthew Moore to open the scoring, indeed Matthew was having an excellent game in attack and was linking up superbly with midfielders Calum Ashby and Kenzie Bradley.

Sydenham came back into the contest and got a goal of their own despite the efforts of Ben Gilliland in the Whites’ defence.

The game was quite evenly matched until Distillery lost goalkeeper Xander Power to injury and although Michael Rocks is a more than able deputy between the sticks the boys missed Michael’s strength in defence.

Sydenham took advantage of this and deservedly scored a few goals before the wee Whites rallied late on and were unlucky not to pull a goal back when Matthew saw two good efforts roll agonisingly past the post.

Game two was against Celtic Boys and in this game Distillery played well without ever being at their best in what was a bit of a scrappy encounter.

Chances were few and far between until Conall Cunningham opened the scoring after good work on the right from Jake Donaghy and Bradley Ingram.

Celtic then had a chance of their own after a mix up in the Whites rearguard but the striker put the shot just wide of the target.

Jake’s deliveries and Ross White and Bradley Ingrams aerial strength have made corners a potent weapon for the wee whites and the boys were unlucky on a number of occasions from these particular set-pieces.

The Celtic defender was putting some dangerous long range free kicks into the whites penalty area but Lewis Doyle in goal dealt with them compently.

Spencer Maxwell got a goal when he poked home a right wing cross and then Jake sent Bradley racing clear, Bradley composed himself before rifling an unstoppable shot past the impressive Celtic keeper
