Old football photograph brings back memories

Local footballers at Hilden Rec in approximately 1934, playing for the George St George Cup. Included is legendary player Joe Bambrick, second row from back, second from right. Joe, who played for Chelsea and Linfield, Bambrick scored 12 goals in 11 games for Ireland, including six in one game against Wales. Bambrick kicked off the match at Hilden. It is thought Joe had just finished playing for Chelsea at the time the photo was taken.

The St George Cup was named after a well-known Lisburn Doctor, George Saint George.

In his time playing, Lisburn man Reggie Shields won two of the St George medals.
