New 3G sports facility opened by Robbie Fowler

FORMER Liverpool star Robbie Fowler was the special guest at the official opening of a new community-based 3G multi sports facility funded by Sport Northern Ireland at Colin Park which is creating six new jobs within the West Belfast complex.

The new sports pitches are part of the ongoing development of Colin Park and Colin Glen Forest Park, where over £475K has been invested over the last 12 months with Sport Northern Ireland contributing circa £244,892 towards the development of the floodlit 3G facility through its Sport Matters Community Capital Programme.

Commenting at the official opening the former England international, said: “Belfast is like Liverpool in many ways, the people have great pride in their City, there is real sense of community spirit and of course there are many talented footballers.

“Sport has a very important part to play in improving the health and well-being of all our communities, particularly in more socially deprived areas and I am delighted to lend my support in launching Colin Park’s exciting new facility which I know will have a positive impact for people across West Belfast and beyond.”

A local social enterprise, the Colin Glen Trust has been a key driver in developing leisure facilities for people in the local community for many years and has recently added an exciting new golf driving range to accompany its 9 hole golf course. Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Colin O’Neill of Colin Glen Trust added: “This development represents the next stage in the Trust’s ongoing efforts to provide leisure and recreation facilities to help improve the social capital, mental and physical health of local people.

“The new pitches will enable local schools and community groups to get involved in a variety of sports. We also intend to run late night soccer leagues and provide opportunities for local clubs and groups who previously could not get access to the facilities they needed.”

Eamonn McCartan, Chief Executive of Sport Northern Ireland welcomed the opening of the project saying:

“Sport Northern Ireland is delighted to work in partnership with Colin glen Trust towards the development of a floodlit 3G facility. This state of the art facility will enable Colin Glen Trust to meet the targets set out in their Sports Development Plan and will significantly improve the sporting provision within West Belfast”.
