Having run up nine against North Down in their previous match, they managed double figures against a hapless Newry side in their first home game of the New Year.

Glen Whitten opened the scoring with a superb reverse stick finish after rounding the keeper in the 3rd minute.

Youngster Aaron Martin then enhanced his growing reputation as a finisher when he brilliantly turned his marker and rasped a reverse stick shot into the roof of the net for 3-0. It was 5-0 by half-time when Davidson converted a penalty stroke and Cummins got his second.

With the game over Garvey’s challenge was to maintain their standards through to the end of the match. Whitten added his second of the day and fifth in two games to make it 6-0. Martin then miraculously deflected home a wild shot from Cummins which came at him chest high only for the youngster to guided it into the roof of the net.

Cummins did complete his hat-trick to make it 8-0 before the goal of the game made it 9. A team move from back to front ended with Whitten laying Martin on to tap in his well deserved and impressive hat-trick.

The final goal came from captain Philip Stirling who finished smartly on the reverse side after the Newry defence failed to clear their lines.

It turned out to be easy pickings for the Garvey men and maybe not the test they would have liked before their Irish Junior Cup tie against Glenanne this weekend. However, they can only draw positives from the ‘professional’ performance to which the whole squad contributed.
