Downshire Tennis Club hosts event

The Inaugural Johnson Campbell County Down Tennis Championships was held recently at Downshire Tennis Club, with the finals day presentation taking place on Saturday June 18.

The event, which was made possible with sponsorship from Graham Glover, Director of Johnson Campbell Financial Services, was one of the first official engagements for new Mayor, Councillor Brian Bloomfield and Mrs Bloomfield.

There were 106 competitors of all ages and abilities from throughout Ireland taking part in the competiton.

Indeed, some of the very best tennis players in Ireland competed for a prize fund of £2000.

Some of the top tennis stars participating were Ed Seator, a former top 500 world ranked player, John McGahon, former Irish Davis Cup Player with a previous ranking in top 900 in the world, Prezmek Stec, five times Ulster Open Tennis Champion between 2009-2015, Alex Watt, three times Ulster Open runner up and Ulster Senior Interprovincial Players, as well as Ruth Copas, a four national Irish title winner, who was ranked No. 1 in the Irish Under 18 League and is now on an American tennis scholarship at the University of New Mexico.

Also taking part were Lynsey McCullough, former Irish Federation Cup player and two times Ulster Open Champion, Lucy Octave, two times Ulster Open Champion 2014 /2015, Emily Beatty, Downshire member, former Ulster Junior Open Champion, Ulster Senior Interprovincial player and now on American Tennis Scholarship at University of Montevallo, Alabama.

Twelve prizes were presented on Saturday evening. The presentation party was made up of the Mayor, Councillor Brian Bloomfield MBE, Mrs Bloomfield, Tennis Ireland President George Stevenson, Downshire Director of Tennis, Ross McCarey, Tournament Referee William Boyd and Sponsor Graham Glover, Director of Johnson Campbell Financial Services.
