Delight and despair for Luke

LISBURN'S Luke Carson endured delight and despair at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old was taking part in the the Men's Artistic Gymnastics at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi, India when he produced an impressive display in the Parallel Bars to set a PB.

However, he made a slight error in the Pommel House and fell a few places to finish in 15th place with 78.200 points.

"I started on rings and did a good routine and then went on to vault and parallel bars where I got a PB and my high bar was also excellent, " said Luke.

"I made one mistake on the floor which nearly cost me a lot but I just saved that. I was happy with the score considering the mistake and then came to pommel horse which is a nervy piece as it is and finishing on it got to my head.

"I sat down on the horse which is a huge mistake and that set me back six places so its devasting for me as it would have been a top 10 placing. I was so sharp in the warm-up so it is disappointing."

Luke's sister Bethany also hit top form in the pool as she helped the Northern Ireland relay team set an Ulster Record in the final of the 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay with a time of 8.13.02. Bethany also reached the semi-final of the 100m butterfly and set a PB of 1.03.130.

There was good news for Aghalee man Mark Montgomery who was moved up to a 5th place rather than 7th in the Greco-Roman Wrestling which is a fantastic achievement. Mark competes again on Saturday in the Freestyle event.

On Day 2 of the Badminton competition (Tues) Northern Ireland defeated Jamaica 4-1 and then in the afternoon were beaten by New Zealand 5-0. The individual event starts on Saturday with Lisburn players Sinead Chambers, Tony Stephenson, Caroline Black and Matt Gleave all in action.
