Scott and Ferris shine in Cup for Derriaghy Seconds

Batting first, the home side made a solid start losing just 1 wicket in the opening 20 overs while putting 90 runs on the board. The Derriaghy bowlers did fare better after this and started to get amongst the wickets but home professional Kalbhor with 48 ensured his side batted out their 50 overs finishing on 244 for 8.

The pick of the visiting bowlers was Wayne Hughes with 3 for 53 while Kenny Gilliland claimed 2 for 66.

The Derriaghy reply was built around Alfie Aphale and while he remained at the wicket his side always had a sniff of victory despite chasing such a high total. Alfie did build useful partnerships with Matthew Ballantyne (31), Andy Kenny (24) and captain Matty Jennings (22) but with around 40 runs required he departed for a splendid 83. After this Curtis Moorhead with 19 and Kenny Gilliland with 17 not out got to the last over needing 12 but could only manage 8 thus giving Woodvale the 4 points.

This Saturday Derriaghy are at home to Dundrum in the league.

In the 1st round of the Intermediate cup at home to Carrick, Derriaghy Seconds batsman David Scott hit a superb 122 not out while opener Dean Ferris struck 77 not out in a record unbeaten 2nd wicket partnership of 214. Both players played some delightful shots with Scott’s tally containing 11 x 4s and 5 x 6s while Ferris hit 6 x 4s and 2 x 6s before the innings closed on 223 for 1.

The visitors put up a decent fight in chasing the required total and this was helped by some wayward bowling at times. However the home side did hold their catches well, 8 in total and in the end Carrick finished 28 runs short. Four bowlers picked up 2 wickets a piece, Simon Gilmore (2 for 35), D Scott (2 for 32) Travis Morehead (2 for 37), D Ferris 2 for 12 with K Beckett had a tidy spell of 1 for 30 off 8. The Seconds now travel to Laurelvale in the next round. This week the Seconds are away on Sunday to Muckamore.

In the league Derriaghy Thirds lost out to an experienced Victoria Seconds team at Fullerton Park. Victoria elected to bat first and made a quick start before the home bowling attack gradually began to slow them down. Young bowlers Ben Nelson, Andrew Edgar, Josh Cardosi, Sam Cardosi were complimented by the experience of Eddie Mumtaz and Rodney Hughes. The 9th wicket partnership for Victoria realised 36 runs which was to prove vital. Hughes finished with 4 wickets, Nelson 2, Mumtaz and the Cardosi brothers one each. There were 3 catches behind the stumps for Michael Jones in a good display from him and a fine catch from Josh Cardosi.

The combination of slow wicket and lush outfield meant that Derriaghy didn’t always get the value their stroke play deserved. The innings finished on 106 leaving the visitors comfortable winners by 56 runs.
