First league win for Derriaghy

Derriaghy claimed their first league win of the season on Saturday with a comprehensive 9 wicket victory over Templepatrick at Queensway.

A heavy shower of rain just minutes before the scheduled starting time put the game in doubt but the game got underway 1 and a half hours late and by that stage had been reduced to 40 overs a side.

With the possibility of further delays it was not surprising that home captain Matty Jennings asked his opponents to bat first. Steady opening spells from Craig Lewis and Kenny Gilliland followed up by Mark Stinson and Scott Hughes meant the visitors had to work hard for runs with wickets falling at regular intervals. Templepatrick were eventually dismissed for 141.

Derriaghy made a brisk start thanks to a quick fire 28 from Yogesh Takawale before he departed with the total on 31. This proved to be the only success for the bowlers as an unbeaten partnership of 112 between Lewis (72no) and Ross Bailey (35no) saw the Queensway men through to victory with nearly 15 overs to spare. Lewis in particular was savage on the bowlers hitting 7 maximums while Bailey grew in confidence as his innings progressed. Captain Jennings will hope for many more wins. The club thank Freddie Parkinson for sponsoring the match ball.
