Derriaghy suffer defeat

After being inserted by the home team most of the early Derriaghy batsmen struggled against the pace attack of David Kennedy (5 for 27).

At 35 for 5 things looked very bleak for the Queensway men but Andrew Kenny and Matty Jennings then produced a 50 run 6th wicket partnership to bring some respectability back to the score. However, after both men departed in rapid succession the innings quickly closed on 104.

When the home side began their chase they found runs much easier to come by and took only 23 overs to reach the required total for the loss of just 1 wicket.

This weekend Derriaghy have two games, on Saturday away to league leaders Lurgan and then at home to bottom placed Dundrum on Sunday, both have 12 noon starts.

Derriaghy Seconds recorded an easy nine wickets win at home to Ballymena last week bowling out their opponents for just 103. Robert Cumins was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 19 while Stuart Mcallister and Daniel Ballantyne both claimed 3 for 16. In reply Cumins hit a brisk 40 before David Scott 44 and S McAllister 20 both remained not out in reaching the target in 15 overs.

In mid week youth games the club Under 11s went down by 5 wickets against Lisburn, Ben Kenny top scoring with 15 in a total of 70.

The under 15s also lost a close and very entertaining match against CIYMS by 12 runs. CIYMS batted first and made a strong start courtesy of a useful opening partnership dominated by D Robinson (50 retired) with extras giving a helping hand. The loss of successive wickets in the 12th over to Patrick Anderson did little to slow the scoring rate and it was the retirement of Robinson that finally put the brakes on as CIYMS finished on 128-5 with P Anderson taking 3 for 25.

Derriaghy got off to a slow start against some hostile bowling from the CIYMS openers and the loss of one of the openers brought Jake McDowell to the crease and he batted superbly to reach 50 before having to retire. The scoring rate increased during Jake’s stay at the wicket and the scores were closely matched for most of the rest of the match despite the loss of regular wickets. Eventually the return of the opening bowlers put a squeeze on the run rate and this was just enough to restrict the home side to 118. Apart from Mcdowell the other significant scorers were U13 player Reece Malone (15) and P Anderson (16) with CIYMS bowler P McCreery finishing with 3 for 23.
