Agonising defeat for Derriaghy despite Lewis century

Derriaghy suffered an agonising 2 wicket defeat at Downpatrick last Saturday despite hitting 285 runs, a total that included a century by top order batsman Craig Lewis.

The visitors went into the game without Indian player coach Alphie Aphale, missing with a hamstring injury and were underdogs against a side who were playing in the semi final of the NCU Senior cup the next day.

The Derriaghy innings was mainly based around Lewis who finished with a superb 101 which included 5 x 6s and 8 x 4s. He shared in good partnerships with Peter Bell 46 and Andrew Kenny.

Downpatrick made a strong reply but lost wickets to and leaving them 115 for 4.

However, their professional Pantil was batting well and went on to record 72 while lower end batsmen Ringland and Cairns both got 50s and this was enough to see them through to victory.

W Hughes and C Moorhead were the pick of the bowlers without much success.

Earlier in the week Derriaghy lost out to Carrickfergus by 11 runs in the final of the NCU Lagan Valley Steels sponsored T20 trophy.

After getting off to a flying start Carrick were well pegged back and had to settle for 138 for 6 from their 20 overs. Derriaghy then began their chase brightly with Ross Bailey and Craig Lewis adding 50 for the 1st wicket in good time.

The home side spinners then began to put the squeeze on the runs and while the Queensway men tried valiantly they could not muster enough as they finished on 127 for 6.

The Second XI had a better weekend reaching the final of the Intermediate Cup with a 6 wicket win over North Down Thirds at Comber.

In a game that concluded on Monday evening due to rain half way through their innings on Saturday they knocked off the 180 runs required.

Aaron Kinnin was the main stay for Derriaghy hitting a stylish 81 not out and well supported by Dean Ferris 38 and Travis Moorhead 26 not out.

In the home side total of 179 for 6 all five bowlers used captured a wicket with Kingsley Becket the most successful with 2 for 37.

On Sunday the Seconds also recorded a league win over Civil Service North by 5 wickets.

Scott Hughes was the pick of the bowlers with 5 for 20 when CSNI batted first while Kingsley Beckett collected 3 as the visitors finished on 154 all out.

A solid contribution by a number of the home sides batsmen notably Mulholland, T Moorhead and Beckett was enough to see their side to victory.

The Fourth XI were also in action on Sunday going down by 20 runs against Carrick.

Nathan Cartmill was the pick of the batsmen here hitting a fine 67 which included 10 boundaries.

Derriaghy will meet Carriackfergus once again, following their T20 encounter, in the Ulster Bank League Section 1 tomorrow (Saturday).
