A weekend of mixed fortunes for Derriaghy

In Saturday’s Ulster Bank league 1 clash at home to Donaghcloney they ran out convincing winners by 177 runs. Batting first on a superb pitch they helped themselves to 333 all out with Kaushik Aphale hitting his second century of the season (110 in total) while Craig Lewis fell just 15 short of what would have been his second ton. Andrew Kenny with 50 and Curtis Moorhead 30 also chipped in with valuable runs.

The visitors lost 2 early wickets in reply before their Indian player M Nigade put up some stubborn resistance hitting 63 but after he was dismissed the remaining batsmen struggled and were eventually all out in the 32nd over for 156. 15 year old Josh Cardosi picked up his first wickets at this level bowling 3.2 overs taking 2 for 0 while C Moorhead 3 for 19 and Aphale 2 for 30 were the other main destroyers.

At home to north west side Killyclooney on Sunday in the Ulster Shield the Queensway men put in a disappointing display and were well beaten by 9 wickets. After winning the toss and batting the home side slumped to 26 for 5 and it took a stand between Curtis Moorhead (57) and Andrew Kenny (37) to get them back in the hunt. However the final total of 168 proved to be way too short as visiting batsman Davy Moan struck the ball to all parts in a magnificent innings of 124 not out and see his team home with nearly 12 overs unused.

This Saturday Derriaghy face Woodvale at home in the league.

Meanwhile the Second XI got their first league win with a 4 wicket defeat of Donaghcloney at The Factory ground. The home side hit 146 with K Beckett and S Hegarty picking up 3 wickets apiece and captain D Scott two. It was Scott who led the way when they chased down the runs required striking 59 while Under 13 captain R Malone chipped in with a useful 27 to see them to victory.

The Third XI, after 5 straight wins in the league tasted their first defeat at Carrick. Andrew Edgar and Ben Nelson each collected 2 wickets as the home team rattled up 208 for 6. Chasing such a big total at this level the Derriaghy batsmen put up a respectful performance with MS Choudhry hitting 50 while Michael Fell remained on 39 not out as they closed on 169 for 5 in reply. The Fourth XI also fell well short against CIYMS, this time by the margin of 8 wickets.

There was more success for the club youth sides with both the Under 11s v Muckamore and Under 13s v Bangor recording league wins. This Friday night the U13s face local rivals Lisburn in the quarter finals of the Banogue cup at Queensway in what should be a keenly contested game. All support welcome.
