Youths spotted swimming in quarry

Parents are being advised to warn their children of the dangers of playing in quarries.

The warning from police follows a number of reports of youths swimming in a quarry on Lurgan Road, Moira.

It comes weeks after two people died in a tragedy at a disused quarry near Annalong.

E District Crime Prevention Officer, Michelle Wilson said: “It is extremely concerning that these young people appear to have no regard for their own safety. It is only a matter of time before someone is injured or worse. We have warned the local community about the dangers of ‘hanging out’, playing or swimming in quarries in previous years however it appears that our message is not getting through.

“We cannot stress enough how dangerous it is to enter a quarry site without even considering getting into water there. Not only are those who illegally enter these areas breaking the law through incidents of trespass and criminal damage but they are also putting themselves at risk.”

She warned, quarries are extremely dangerous sites with unseen hazards.
