Work set to start on 146 new homes at Ballymacoss

THE much anticipated transfer of land at The Hill in Ballymacoss for social housing was completed last week between Lisburn City Council and Ulidia Housing.

Following a request from the Department for Social Development some years ago, the Council agreed to offer seven acres of land in North Lisburn for the provision of social housing. The transfer to Ulidia Housing will enable the construction of 146 new homes to start in the near future.

Councillor William Leathem, Chairman of the Council’s Corporate Services Committee, said: “At long last work can begin on providing much needed social housing in the north of our City and I am pleased that the Council has been able to play its part by providing the land to make it happen.

“The £2.5 million income from this land transfer has also enabled the Council to minimise any rates rise this year while still investing significantly in a series of flagship projects such as the regeneration of Wallace Park and upgrade of Aberdelghy Golf Course.”

Welcoming this green light, the Mayor and Chairman of Lisburn City Housing Liaison Committee, Alderman Paul Porter said the project could provide valuable business opportunities for the local construction industry.

“Not only will this £12 million housing scheme provide much needed housing in an area of significant need it will also be a massive injection into the local building industry and local economy which is so important at this time,” he said.

“Now that the sale of the land is finally complete, I hope that the Ballymacoss Housing Scheme is delivered as quickly as possible.”
