Women in hospitalfollowing chip pan fire

TWO women were treated for the affects of breathing in smoke at Lagan Valley Hospital following a chip pan fire at a semi-detached house at Milltown Avenue last Wednesday afternoon.

Fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus were called around 6pm and used a hosereel jet to deal with the fire while both women were taken to the Lagan Valley hospital to be checked out.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service has offered residents using chip pans some helpful advice to keep themselves safe.

They urge people to use a deep fat fryer instead but if they are using a chip pan never put the food in the pan if the oil begins to give off smoke and turn off the heat and leave the oil to cool, otherwise it could catch fire.

Keep your grill pan clean, and never leave it unattended.

If your pan does catch fire do not move it, turn off the heat if safe to do so, but never lean over the pan and never throw water on the fire.
