Video - On the scene of M1 fire

UPDATE - Two fire appliances had to navigate rush hour traffic on the M1 to deal with a car on fire tonight

No one was injured but many were upset having to witness the car exploding and the huge plumbs of smoke caused some upset to other drivers.

The police were tightlipped about what happened but a spokesperson from the NI Fire and Rescue Service said it took 15 minutes to get to the blaze.

The spokesperson said that numerous people on the motorway had contacted the Fire Service but due to the huge build up in rush hour traffic it took 15 minutes to reach the scene.

The incident happened on the M1 countrybound close to Saintfield Rd at 5pm.

We will have a full update tomorrow but watch the video of the scene as the NI Fire and Rescue Service arrived to help.

The vehicle caught fire on the hard shoulder of the motorway country-bound yards from the Saintfield Road off-slip at Lisburn before 5.30pm.

The incident caused long tailbacks back into Belfast.

An ambulance was first on the scene before firefighters arrived and put out the blaze.
