Sudden death of Hildenbowler

Gary Finlay, aged 55, had played in club tournaments on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights and there were no indications of any problems.

Following the game on Wednesday night, a few club members stayed behind for a cup of tea and a game of cards.

A spokesman at the club said that Gary had gone outside for a cigarette.

“We later noticed he had been missing and went to investigate,” they said.

“It was then we found him, lying bleeding on the ground. An ambulance was requested and an attempt was made by a club member to resuccitate Gary,

However, it was later revealed he had died instantly, leaving those present in total shock.

Gary played for Hilden B team, but this was said to be his choice as he was good enough to play for the seniors and, indeed, club president, Raymond Gourley, said he had been chosen to play for the A team on Saturday and had ticked his name off on the notice board.

An outgoing character, Gary was extremely popular with everyone at the club, both men and ladies, and his pleasant approach to life will be missed by many.

The Hilden green was closed until after the funeral, which was held on Monday and all matches, including the Veterans League and A team fixtures, were cancelled as a mark of respect.

The committee and members of Hilden Bowling Club extend sincere condolences to his wife, Christine, and the family circle, and the many bowlers who knew him will join in these expressions of regret.
