Student competes for a place on WorldSkills team

BRYAN Craig, a refrigeration student at South Eastern Regional College in Lisburn, has earned a place on Squad UK and will now compete for a place on Team UK for WorldSkills 2011 to be held in London in October.

WorldSkills is the world’s largest international skills competition where young people from across the globe compete to become the best of the best in their chosen skill. 150,000 visitors are expected to watch 1,000 competitors from 50 nations competing in 45 skill areas over four exciting days of competition. Squad UK consists of young people, aged 18 to 24, who are currently in training for a place in the team that will represent the UK at WorldSkills 2011.

“I became involved in refrigeration because I have a family history in the frozen food market,” explained Bryan. “I heard about skills competitions from lecturers at the Further Education college I was attending who recommended competing, so I followed their advice and was successful.

“My advice to other young people considering a vocational career would be to complete an NVQ qualification as skilled trades are essential for the economy. As long as you are skilled at your trade, you will be in demand.”

John Nixon, Head of School for Construction and Engineering Services at South Eastern Regional College commented: “I would like to congratulate Bryan.

“This is something to be proud of and I hope he cherishes this achievement for a long time. He is a credit to the College, his family and his employer.”

Adding his congratulations, Employment and Learning Minister Danny Kennedy said: “Northern Ireland’s strong representation among Squad UK is testament to the high standards of vocational training in our colleges and the commitment to excellence shown by our young people. I wish every squad member well with their tr

“aining, and look forward to watching their progress in the run up to WorldSkills.”
