Rural areas to receive recycling bins after funding boost

RURAL properties in the Lisburn area will soon be receiving wheelie bins for recycling and food waste collection, while up to 3,000 extra homes will be included in the Council's Waste Collection Service from the New Year.

The move comes after the Council were successful in their bid for funding to the Rethink Waste Fund Project, receiving 241,000 for two new 7.5 tonne refuse collection vehicles, bins, caddies and boxes, which will allow waste to be collected from areas they currently can't access, with the smaller vehicles able to travel down country lanes and visit apartment blocks that are not currently included in the Waste Collection Service.

One of the new vehicles will be used to provide a two weekly collection of mixed dry recyclables from approximately 3,000 apartments, townhouses and rural properties. A 240 litre wheeled bin will then be provided to each household in rural areas, whilst two 50 litre boxes will be provided instead of wheeled bins to apartments and townhouses.

The second vehicle will be used to provide a two weekly collection of mixed dry organic and food waste from the same properties. Again a 240 litre wheeled bin will be provided to each rural household, whilst a 25 litre caddy and 7.5 litre kitchen caddy will be provided to apartments and townhouses.

The funding will assist the Council in achieving its NI Landfill Allowance Scheme (NILAS) targets and assist them in meeting its obligation to divert an average of 664 tonnes per annum of waste from landfill, as well as to provide an better recycling service to all rate payers.

Councillor James Tinsley, Chairman of the Environmental Services Committee, said that receiving the funding was "very good news" for Lisburn.
