Rifles getting set to leave Kabul

The former Commander of 38 (Irish) Brigade – Brigadier Rob Thomson – led a “march-in” of troops to Parliament at Westminster on Monday January 26 to represent the commitment across the three armed services to Afghanistan.

Brigadier Thomson, who left Northern Ireland to command the last combat troops to leave Afghanistan is also a former Commanding Officer of Lisburn-based 2 Rifles, who are shortly to leave Kabul where they have been serving the UK’s ongoing training and mentoring commitment to the Afghan National Army.

The parade saw 120 personnel, accompanied by the Band of the Grenadier Guards, march from Wellington Barracks to the Houses of Parliament.

There they were met by Ministers and MPs ahead of a reception by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Armed Forces.
