Recycling centre closed by stone throwing vandals

ANTRIM Council was forced to close Crumlin Household Recycling Centre last Wednesday after staff came under attack from youths throwing stones.

The Centre, off Main Street in the village, was closed from mid afternoon for the rest of the day causing significant inconvenience to residents.

Michael Laverty, Environment Manager with Antrim Council said they had been left with no other option.

“Centre Attendants were attacked with stones which not only put them at risk but also caused damage to property and vehicles within the site,” he said.

PSNI attended the incident and we felt we had no alternative but to close the Centre to guarantee the safety of our staff and users of the facility.

“Staff were redeployed to work at the other two Household Recycling Centres situated in the Borough and it was the residents of Crumlin who were put to the most bother for the rest of the day. These vandals are causing harm to their families, friends and neighbours and attacks such as these need to stop immediately.”
