Poor funding ‘causing childcare problems’

THE first ever report to examine wraparound childcare provision in primary schools in Northern Ireland was launched at Stormont by Lisburn charity Employers For Childcare Charitable Group.

Wraparound childcare includes breakfast clubs, afterschool clubs and holiday schemes which are provided outside of the normal school day. 49% of schools that participated in the study offered some form of provision.

“The report demonstrated that schools are eager to support families through the provision of flexible and affordable childcare, however in doing so face significant financial challenges.

“Many schools are unable to offer any provision due to lack of funding.

The report launch was hosted by the Chair of the Education Committee Mervyn Storey and Committee Member Michaela Boyle. In attendance were representatives from primary schools, Education and Library Boards, Health and Social Care Trusts, Government officials and politicians.

The survey showed that wraparound childcare in primary schools is less expensive than provision offered in private settings.

“In aspiring to keep their costs down, schools often offer unlimited places and only charge families for what they use.

“As a result, schools experience significant stress.

Nora Smith, Policy and Information Director with Employers For Childcare Charitable Group, stated: “This report demonstrates that primary schools are making a significant contribution to the provision of school age childcare despite limited financial backing.

“Schools should be applauded for their intervention in facilitating families that work.

“This report provides further evidence for the urgent need to place childcare on a statutory footing.”

Childcare is an economic and a labour market issue and in the Government’s quest to get more people into and remaining in work, Employers For Childcare Charitable Group advocates that the lack of school age childcare urgently needs to be addressed.
