Police investigatingtowpath racial attack

Police have said that a racially motivated attack on the men is one line of enquiry currently being investigated.

At approximately 2.20am the two men aged 36 and 32 were assaulted by a number of men on the towpath, between Bridge Street and Hill Street.

The two Polish men required medical treatment for their injuries, which are not thought to be life threatening.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact Lisburn Police Station on the non emergency number, 101.

Mr Craig, meanwhile, said he hoped the police could find out quickly who carried out the attack and make arrests.

The incident came just weeks after another attack in which a man was assaulted near a public bar and had to use the building to take cover.

“These people who carry out these attacks do not have a positive part to play,” Councillor Alexander Redpath said.

“All civilised people condemn this sort of violence.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families at this very difficult time.

“I have spoken to members of the Polish community since the attack to assure them of my ongoing support and the support of the whole council.”

Recent attempts to combat racism and integrate foreign nationals include a Welcome Project - a community based scheme - set up in Old Warren, offering a wide range of advice and practical help to support ethnic minorities and migrant workers.

It’s main aim is to create a truly inclusive and safe community which welcomes all regardless of difference.

The project was developed in 2006 with the aim of breaking barriers surrounding stereotypes and promoting tolerance and integration. Migrant workers and the ethnic community have been supported through learning, advice and support.
