Planners slam brakes on Lisburn city centre car park

THE Planning Service has been criticised for recommending the closure of a city centre car park.

Speaking at a meeting of the council's Planning Committee, Alderman Jim Dillon said the car park at Jordan's Mill in Antrim Street was "one of the most used car parks in Lisburn".

In refusing the planning application to allow the car park to be retained for a further year, the Planners stated: "A need for this car parking within the area has not been identified within the Belfast Metropolitan Transport Plan or by the developer through a robust analysis, and the application does not include other programmed proposals to develop the site."

Rejecting the statement from the Planners that there is no need for the car park, Mr Dillon proposed the planning application for the retention of the car park should be sent to the Planning Service Management Board to be re-examined.

"Whilst the Planning Service is saying there are enough car parks without this one I would like to know where they are getting their information from," said Mr Dillon. "This is the most used car park in Lisburn."

Seconding Mr Dillon's proposal, Councillor William Leathem added: "This is a very well used car park."
